January 20
Box Contents:
2 lbs Gold Oak Mandarins
1 hd Red Cabbage
1 bu Green Garlic
1.5 lb Alegria Potatoes
1 .5 lbs Loose Carrots
1 hd Napa Cabbage
Field Notes: We had some interesting picking weather with 40-degree days and pouring rain. Over this past week we also had some sub 32 degree mornings, which help make the winter crops extra sweet! We are continuing to harvest carrots, greens, leeks, fennel, lettuce, and more brassicas coming soon. Spinach and arugula are planted. Onions are transplanted. This time of year, the potatoes start to sprout. They can be cut in half and planted if you have garden! Don’t worry about the sprouts for eating, just rub them or cut them off while washing them. They still taste great fried, steamed, roasted, or in soup.
Box Notes: We will include mandarins from Gold Oak Ranch, Esparto, in this week’s veggie box. They are certified organically grown by CCOF. Gold Oak Ranch is a family-run farm in the Capay Valley. Owner, David Scheuring has been farming for more than 40 years with his family and is committed to sustainable agriculture techniques. Blue Heron navel oranges from Rumsey are for sale at: https://csa.farmigo.com/store/riverdogfarmcsa. 10 lbs. for $20 or 20 lbs. for $40! Place your order soon. These sweet oranges are going fast.
News: We have added a new drop site in El Cerrito to the Wednesday route. You may also switch to this site if it is more convenient for you. This site is near Lexington and Lincoln. Please let your friends and neighbors know!
